Making A Move

* This post contains a lot of links. However, all but two are links of people. I don’t really worry about SEO on my site :)

I’ve spent the last three months somewhere I always knew I could reach; a big time, global, award winning agency.  Coming from a school with no advertising or PR program, getting to where I’ve gotten could be seen as a success in itself. My marketing degree was more focused on sales, and social media sure wasn’t in the classroom when I was a student. I owe a lot of my success to my passion for learning, but probably more thanks go to people that have helped me along the way. To those that are general fans of me, I want to send a huge ‘thank you’ for all that you’ve done.

Anyhoo, here’s the news; I’m leaving Edelman to rejoin my buddies at Lakeshore Branding. Yes, I’m leaving the company that just hired David Armano, who is just as nice as he is smart, which really says something. The agency that is making waves for hiring a community manager, who I happen to know personally and would have loved to work with further. So, you might be asking yourself, “Self, why is Brandon leaving Edelman?” The answer: Opportunity.

Risk = Reward?

I’ve always believed in the saying ‘the greater the risk, the greater the reward,’ but haven’t really walked the walk too often. My role at Edelman, while encompassing many different clients, has been pretty specialized for the most part. I’m pretty damn good at using Radian6 now, and I’ve learned quite a bit about mom bloggers and QAing websites. But, I feel I’m capable of more. At 25, I felt now was the time to take that opportunity. After seeing Doni head to Boulder, Jenn jet off to L.A., Derek start a company in Vancouver, and not to mention Matt making a name for himself on his own, I had the confidence to do it myself.

So what will I be doing? Building a social media presence. Search marketing. SEO. Link building. Blogging. Helping build a company. Lots of things I have strong passions for that I would never have the opportunity of doing at Edelman. I can work hours that fit my life better; I like staying up late and sleeping in. I’ll get to do that. I’ll get to work from home frequently and keep my dog company so he isn’t crated for over eight hours a day. I’ll be attending tweetups and events more often. I might even get to play some more hockey. I’m excited because I know Lakeshore Branding has done great work in the past and has great things in store for the future.

I will definitely miss all the great friends I made during my time at Edelman. Sarah, Jason, Nivene, Caleb, Eliza, Archana, Rebecca, Gloria, Jessi, Amanda and Jessica have all been great to work with (among others), and I hope to keep relationships with all of them. I’ll be watching Edelman closely, and who knows, maybe I’ll be able to return one day.

So here’s to the future. Here’s to hoping the reward does indeed equal or exceed the risk.

It will be sad to see you go, and I'll miss your hard work! But I'm so impressed and just glad to see you pursuing your dreams! :) So cheesy to say, but so true. We'll definitely have to see each other around the Chicago tweetup scene, my friend.

Thanks Rebecca! It's been great working with you and we will definitely see each other around town.

I'm so excited for you, buddy! Chris, yourself, and the rest of the Lakeshore gang do some great work, and you focusing more of your efforts with them will only result in greater work and opportunity for you both.

I think the reward has already exceeded the risk, as you'll be able to adapt a more fitting lifestyle to you, and find greater joy in the work you do. Congrats man!

Congrats on the move, BZ. Looking forward to hearing about how it goes.

Hopefully this will free you up to take more awesome gentleman shots in front of fireplaces.

Aww, first of all thanks so much for the shout-out! Second, congrats and good luck on the move! Either track would've been absolutely amazing, and I commend you for following your heart and taking the jump into where your heart is! I can't wait to see how this continues to work out! I <3'ed meeting the LSB folks last time I was there :)

It's not totally weird to say I'm really fricking proud of you, is it? Because I am, and I honestly CANNOT WAIT to see what happens next. You know that if you ever need anything, you let me know. I'm here.

Wishing you luck, Brandon! And if you get tired of working from home (I know I do sometimes), come hang out with Jelly at Noble Tree Monday and Wednesday afternoons. It's a huge dose of inspiration.

    Whoa! Congrats!

Brandon, if I didn't travel so much I'd take your foursquare mayorship in a heartbeat. :-) Best of luck.

Congrats and good luck sir! I know you'll rock it!

@Tim: Thanks Tim! I also looked at you're life and how happy you are running Beyond the Pedway as inspiration.

@Caleb: More gentlemanly shots are a guarantee.

@Doni: You're right; either situation would have been great. I really struggled with the decision for a while because it sure was difficult justifying leaving a place like Edelman. Glad to see you're doing so well out in CO!

@Caitlin: Thank you so much. I definitely wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for you. Can't wait to see what you end up doing next.

@Allie: Thanks! I felt a little easier about my decision knowing you did basically the same thing just a few months ago. As far as Jelly, I absolutely plan on stopping by sometime. I'm a big fan of co-working in general and having a familiar face there would be great.

    @John: Haha, surprise!

@David: You'd make a fine mayor of Edelman! I'm really glad to have gotten to meet you and learn from you, even if it was for just a short period of time.

Thanks man. Congrats on your recent successes as well! I can tell you're loving it.

Hey and congrats on the move! I recently made a career move myself and know exactly how excited you may be. Best wishes and thanks for the Radian6 shout-out!

Great post! I'm so happy to hear about your move and I know you'll do great things. Congrats!

BTW I'm taking that mayorship. Beward @Armano.

@Katie: Thanks for stopping by! I think you came onto my radar because of your move to Radian6. What a great company to be working for. Keep up the great work!

@Suzanne: Thanks :) It makes me happy to know that the mayorship battle will continue long after I'm gone. Talk about leaving a legacy…

I'm excited for you! I think you'll be a great addition to any team :)

(I'm using my work account because I'm too lazy to sign out :P )

Obviously I'm slowing catching up on everyone, but I wanted to say that I'm honored to have been included as an inspiration, and more importantly to say that you're capable of huge, huge things. I was offered roles at companies like Edelman, and although never officially approached by their team I think the people we know there represent the quality of their culture and insight. I talk about Edelman in Vancouver constantly.

You are a talent, my friend, and a firm like that was lucky to have you briefly. A new firm is even luckier, and you've made a decision that demands diligence. Small, new firms face uphill battles and require the people within them to rally hard. You can make a difference and that means you need to drive your intuition into productive endeavors. Push limits and build your community. Reach out and leverage your relationships. Think ahead and outsmart your competition.

Leave no room for regret. And make something you're proud of.

    The rest follows.

(I hope…I wouldn't call myself a success by any means:))

    Derek,

Thanks for the extremely kind words. You (and others) have shown me that there should be little to stand in the way of following your passion and taking these opportunities head on.
